Hello from Florida!

I am one of the Co-Chairs for the State and District Coordinators Special Interest Group (SIG) within SHAPE America. I am currently the District Coordinator for Health and Physical Education from Brevard Public schools in Florida. I began my career 20 years ago in New York. I received my undergraduate degree from SUNY Cortland and my Masters from Hofstra University. I taught Health and PE for 12 years for the NYC Board of Ed.  My co-chair, Shannon Milliken,  is the Comprehensive PE and Wellness Senior Consultant in the Health and Wellness Unit for the Colorado Department of Education. Shannon is a graduate of the University of Northern Colorado receiving both her bachelors and masters degrees.  She is a past president of SHAPE Colorado and a passionate advocate for quality health and physical education. We are excited to serve you for the next few years.

We are currently planning our state and district coordinators (SDC) meeting. The SDC SIG meeting is scheduled Tuesday, April 21st from 1:00 pm – 5:00 pm. If you need a copy of the draft agenda, please email me at Winsten.Rachel@brevardschools.org and I can send you one. We know many of you need an agenda in order to submit travel forms and we wanted to provide that for you in the hopes that you would be joining us in April.  As always we want to create an agenda that will help you in your role. If there are any “hot topics” you would like to put up for discussion or any vendors you would like to see present to the group, please share that with us so we can work with SHAPE America to make that happen. A survey will be sent out closer to the convention to gauge attendance at our annual meeting. If you are a State or District leader for Health & Physical Education and are not receiving emails from our CEO Stephanie Morris about this meeting, please let us know so we can get you on that list.

We look forward to planning a great meeting and serving all of you.

    Hi Rachel (and Shannon) !
Thanks so much for managing the SDC SIG. The Coordinators Meeting is always a highlight of my convention. As administrators/decision-makers in the field, it’s really important that we communicate regularly and gather each year to network and support each other. Looking forward to the agenda and to seeing all of my admin friends in April.

HI everyone! I can’t wait for the convention in Salt Lake City!

BUT I have a question I was hoping to get an answer from some of you on. We are reviewing our current physical education policy as it relates to teaching swim and requirements for lifeguards during swim classes.

Could you please let me know if your school district has swim during PE classes and if you do, is there a dedicated lifeguard on deck in addition to the physical education teacher or swim teacher?

Wisconsin State Statute currently allows the swim teacher (in this case our PE teachers) to teach while simultaneously being the lifeguard on duty. All of our PE teachers are both Water Safety Instructor certified by the American Red Cross and are currently certified Lifeguards through the American Red Cross. We are trying to find out what other districts are doing.

I thank you for your time!
